The Ponaganset Chieftains are taking a road trip to face off against the Chariho Chargers at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Ponaganset has given up an average of 9.7 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Ponaganset managed to slip by Coventry the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Chieftains lost 14-0 to the Oakers on Tuesday. The game marked the first time this season in which the Chieftains were not able to get on the board.
Ponaganset saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kyla Angell, who went 1-for-2 with one double.
Meanwhile, Chariho faced Prout in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Chargers came out on top against the Crusaders by a score of 7-2. The victory was a breath of fresh air for the Chargers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Adriana Jeannenot made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Brianna DeGiacomo was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double. Maddie Dorgan was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base.
Chariho kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Chariho now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Ponaganset, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-4.
Thursday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Ponaganset hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Chariho struggles in that department as they've averaged .320. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Ponaganset couldn't quite finish off Chariho in their previous matchup back in May of 2023 and fell 8-6. Can the Chieftains avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
