Pershing County is 0-10 against West Wendover since April of 2022 but things could change on Friday. The Pershing County Mustangs will face off against the West Wendover Wolverines at 3:00 p.m. Pershing County has given up an average of 10.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
The home team had won the previous two meetings between Pershing County and North Tahoe, and North Tahoe kept the tradition alive. Pershing County came up short against North Tahoe on Saturday, falling 15-8. Even though they lost, the Mustangs' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.1 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
Ayden Montes and Cade Liebsack stepped up to the plate in a big way. Montes scored a run while going 3-for-5, while Liebsack scored two runs while going 1-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Liebsack a new career-high in RBI (two). Jacob Henderson also deserves some recognition as he got his first hits of the season.
Even though they lost, Pershing County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .405. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, West Wendover entered their tilt with Sierra Lutheran on Saturday with two consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with three. They came out on top against the Falcons by a score of 6-1.
Adrian Perez was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 2-for-3. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Danny Soriano, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
West Wendover's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-2. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to strikeouts: they averaged an imposing ten strikeouts in those games compared to only 2.75 in the others. As for Pershing County, they now have a losing record of 3-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. Pershing County has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like West Wendover struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Pershing County might still be hurting after the 20-3 defeat they got from West Wendover in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can Pershing County avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
