SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - After taking the lead in the fourth quarter,
Archbishop Riordan (San Francisco, Calif.) held on for a 24-21 victory over
Sacred Heart Cathedral (San Francisco, Calif.) on Saturday. The difference for the Crusaders was that
Ivan Cardenas ran for a touchdown.
The Crusaders led 10-0 at halftime, but the Fightin' Irish recaptured the lead on a
Logan White touchdown pass to
Joe Merriwether with 8:00 remaining in the fourth. Archbishop Riordan grabbed hold of the lead when Cardenas ran for a touchdown with 3:00 remaining in the fourth quarter, and never relinquished it.
AR saw its 10-point halftime lead decrease to four entering the fourth.
The final score was a stunner, as the Crusaders was ranked No. 613 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for California, far below Sacred Heart Cathedral's spot at No. 283.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Archbishop Riordan, which was coming off a 49-15 defeat at the hands of St. Francis in its previous game. The win broke Archbishop Riordan's three-game losing streak.
In a West Catholic game next week Archbishop Riordan (3-4) takes on Valley Christian, and Sacred Heart Cathedral (2-5) will go up against Bellarmine also in a West Catholic game.
