Basketball Recap: Trego Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Bailey Ziegler and Tegan Lang

Trego was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. The contest between them and the Smith Center Redmen didn't end well, with the Trego Golden Eagles falling 44-29. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Golden Eagles of the 43-27 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.

Trego's loss came despite strong showings from Tegan Lang and Bailey Ziegler. Lang posted 13 points in addition to five boards and three steals, while Ziegler scored seven points along with 12 rebounds and three blocks. That was a full 44.8% of Trego's points, marking the third time in a row Lang has had more than a third of the team's points.

Smith Center was led to victory by Kaylee Weltmer and Kayln Ifland. Weltmer dropped a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Ifland earned 14 points in addition to eight boards and six steals. Weltmer is becoming a predictor of Smith Center's success: when she posts at least 15 points the team is 2-1 (and 4-12 when she doesn't). Maria Mangiameli also deserves some recognition as she scored her first point of the season.

Trego's loss dropped their record down to 5-15. As for Smith Center, their record now sits at 6-13.

Trego does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Smith Center, they are taking a road trip to square off against Beloit at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
