Softball Recap: United Lions vs. Ferndale Yellow Jackets
United had lost 12 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 0-15 to make it 13. They came up short against the Ferndale Yellow Jackets, falling 18-3. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Yellow Jackets this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 19-3 two weeks ago.
Mya Lichtenfels made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Another player making a difference was Kenedi Fiochetta, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
As for Ferndale, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.
On Ferndale's side, Abigail Barley was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, three runs, and three doubles. Those five RBI gave Barley a new career-high. Izabel Chuklochak was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
Looking ahead, United will square off against Portage at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Ferndale, they will take on Berlin Brothersvalley at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Mountaineers will roll in looking for their tenth straight win, something the Yellow Jackets surely won't give up without a fight.
