For the first time this season, Covenant Day will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Covenant Day Lions challenge Cannon Cougars at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They are coming into the match hot, having won their last seven games.
Covenant Day had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Philip Simmons on Wednesday. Covenant Day blew past Philip Simmons 9-3.
Brode Dixon was excellent, scoring a run while going 1-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of James Cosper, who scored two runs while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, Cannon was able to grind out a solid win over Charlotte S last Thursday, taking the game 8-5.
Thomas Smith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered five earned runs on nine hits and racked up eight Ks. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-low in walks (zero).
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mason Mierzwa, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one double. That triple marked the first that he hit this season. Reid Morgan was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-4.
Cannon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive games.
Covenant Day pushed their record up to 9-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.3 runs over those games. As for Cannon, their record now sits at 4-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Covenant Day has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 12.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cannon struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 8.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Covenant Day couldn't quite finish off Cannon in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 and fell 3-1. Can Covenant Day avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
