Football Recap: Odessa Falls Despite Big Games from Andrew Rodriguez and Phillip Carrasco

Odessa had lost seven straight at home dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped down to 0-9 to make it eight. They fell just short of the San Angelo Central Bobcats by a score of 35-32. The Bronchos gained 109 more yards on the day, but it was the Bobcats that made the best use of them.

Phillip Carrasco and Andrew Rodriguez certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Carrasco threw for 302 yards and a pair of TDs, while Rodriguez picked up 193 receiving yards. Rodriguez was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 53 yards.

As for San Angelo Central, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-4. Given their advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 216th, while Odessa is ranked 812th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

San Angelo Central found their leader in sophomore Zeyvion Johnson, who rushed for 141 yards and one touchdown on only 15 carries. Those 141 rushing yards set a new season-high mark for Johnson. Another player making a difference was Elijah Allen, who rushed for 54 yards and one score.

Odessa didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 58-28 defeat against Midland Legacy on the 7th. As for San Angelo Central, they have also already played their next contest, a 52-16 victory against Frenship on the 6th.
