Softball Game Preview: Spartanburg Vikings vs. Blacksburg Wildcats

Spartanburg and Blacksburg are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Spartanburg Vikings will host the Blacksburg Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Spartanburg is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.

While Spartanburg's victory against Wade Hampton wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Spartanburg won by a run and slipped past Wade Hampton 8-7. While the Vikings didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-15-1), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Sydney Anderson made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.3 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Carlee Richards was a standout: she scored two runs while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two). Tori Earle was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing Three bases. while going 3-for-4.

Spartanburg kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 14 runs the game before, Blacksburg was a bit more limited in their contest on Thursday. They came up short against Chesnee, falling 8-2.

Blacksburg saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ema Gaut, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Spartanburg's win bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Blacksburg, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-3.

Spartanburg couldn't quite get it done against Blacksburg when the teams last played back in April of 2024 as they fell 8-5. Can Spartanburg avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
