Basketball Recap: Deer Trail Eagles vs. Bethune Bobcats
Deer Trail unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They fell just short of the Bethune Bobcats by a score of 36-34 on Friday. The Eagles lost against the Bobcats in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 48-14 score last time.
Despite the loss, Deer Trail saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Carlos Pena posted eight points. Chauncy Gudenkauf was another key player, putting up ten points.
Bethune's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Josh Salinas led the charge by posting 14 points. Another player making a difference was Caleb Gitschlag, who earned six points in addition to six boards and four steals.
Deer Trail wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 57-37 defeat against Miami-Yoder on the 6th. As for Bethune, they have also already played their next game, a 67-33 loss against Pikes Peak Christian on the 6th.
