Basketball Game Preview: Churchill Chargers vs. Sotomayor WILDCATS

The Churchill Chargers will face off against the Sotomayor WILDCATS at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Sotomayor will be up against a hot Churchill squad: the team just extended their winning streak to five. Churchill was the clear victors by a 67-46 margin over LEE on Wednesday. Given the Chargers' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 163rd, while the Volunteers are ranked 732nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Sotomayor ended up a good deal behind Harlan on Wednesday and lost 79-63. The WILDCATS haven't had much luck with the Hawks recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Churchill will need to focus on slowing down Justin Mcbryde, one of several Sotomayor players who made an impact when they last played. He posted 12 points. What's more, Mcbryde also posted a 67% field goal percentage, which is the highest he's achieved since back in December of 2024. Demian Joyner was another key player, putting up seven points.

Even though they lost, Sotomayor smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in three consecutive matches.

Churchill pushed their record up to 21-13 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.0 points over those games. As for Sotomayor, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-14.

Churchill skirted past Sotomayor 63-60 when the teams last played back in December of 2024. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Sotomayor's Jasiah Saunders, who went 8-for-19 en route to 22 points and eight boards.
