Baseball Recap: Messalonskee Takes Down Ranked Mt. Blue

Messalonskee faced Mt. Blue in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Eagles came out on top against the Cougars by a score of 5-2. This was a revenge game for the Eagles: when they faced off against the Cougars on May 13th, they had to take a 8-1 loss.

Dennis Martin made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. He is becoming a predictor of Messalonskee's success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is undefeated (and 5-6 when he doesn't). Martin was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Martin wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sean Achorn, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Messalonskee is undefeated when Achorn posts two or more stolen bases, but 5-6 otherwise.

The victory made it two in a row for Messalonskee and bumps their season record up to 8-6. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Mt. Blue, they moved to 10-5 with that defeat, which also ended their six-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Messalonskee will head out on the road to square off against Skowhegan at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Mt. Blue, they will head out to face off against Lawrence at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last four games the Bulldogs have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
