For the final MaxPreps Xcellent Baseball rankings, we’ve decided to expand the number of highlighted teams to 100. Sumrall finishes the season as the No. 1 overall team in the nation and appears to have enough talent coming back next year to make a run at a third straight Mississippi 3A state title.
Included in each team’s capsule listed below are the results of its final game, a list of the top players and the honors and awards they received this year, a list of all drafted players from that team and a look at who will return next year.

1. Sumrall (Miss.), 36-0
Highlights: Defeated South Pontotoc 11-1 for second straight class 3A state championship…Jared Miller was the MHSAA Class 3A player of the year after batting .412 with 50 RBI, nine doubles and 14 home runs. He was also 11-0 on the mound with 106 strikeouts. Luke Lowery (10-0, 103 Ks, .480), Jackson Posey (.505, 60 RBI, 13 Dbls, 10 HRs) and Chase Lewallen (.435, 39 RBI, 10 Dbls, 5 HRs) were also all-state picks.

Who Returns: The Bobcats could win a third straight state championship as Posey (a junior), Lowery (soph) and Lewallen (jr) all return along with 12 other letterman. Other notables include Austin Knight (.342, C, Soph), Barron Conner (.349, 2B, Soph), and Austin Carter (.468, OF, Soph).
2. Naples (Fla.) 33-1
Highlights: Defeated Bishop Moore 3-2 for Class 4A state championship…Josh Patton was the Naples Daily News Player of the Year after posting a 10-0 mound record with a 0.66 ERA and 88 strikeouts…Brad Fieger (.452, 44 RBI, 18 Dbls, 6 HR), Tyler Koronas (.380, 4 DBl, 2 HR), Ryan Sadler (.375, 21 RBI, 4 DBL, 4 HR) and Kyle Zech (.447, 26 RBI, 4 DBL) all made the all-area team.
Drafted: Ryan Sadler, P/1B, Round 39, Twins.
Who Returns: Twelve of the 19 players on the Golden Eagle roster return next year, including Zech (OF, Jr) and Fieger (3B, Jr). Other notables include Cameron Griffin (.390, OF, Jr) and Bobby Oliver (.362, OF, Jr).
3. Northshore (Slidell, La.), 34-2
Highlights: Defeated Dutchtown 7-2 for Class 5A state championship…The Panthers placed two on the Class 5A all-state team, including Most Outstanding Player Chad Gough-Fortenberry (.534, 38 RBI, 13 DBL, 16 HRs), and outfielder Taylor Eads (.490, 53 RBI, 10 DBLs, 6 HRs)…Cody Deckwa (9-1, 60 K) was honorable mention.

Who Returns: Taylor Eads (OF, Jr) returns along with 13 other lettermen. Others include all-district player Ryan Eades (.369, Ut, Jr), Chase Compton (.361, 3B-P, Jr), Breck Kline (.324, SS, Soph), and Trey Rickrode (.283, 2B, Jr).
4. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), 40-4
Highlights: Topped Cimarron-Memorial 3-1 for fourth straight Class 4A state championship…As a team, The Gaels hit 72 home runs, 124 doubles and batted .462 with 560 runs scored…Jeff Malm was the Gatorade Player of the Year for Nevada for the second straight season after batting .564 with 69 RBI, 13 doubles and 17 home runs. He also tied the national record for career basehits…Malm was the Las Vegas Journal Review Player of the Year and was joined on the 4A all-state team by Stephen Manthei (10-1, 1.55 ERA, 80 K), Erik Van Meetren (.496, 12 HR, 64 RBI, national record 5 home runs in one game), Johnny Field (.518, 14 HR, 67 RBI, 78 runs), and Joey Rickard (.545, 7 HR, 62 RBI, 23 DBLs).

5. Alonso (Tampa, Fla.), 31-3
Highlights: Topped Columbus 4-3 for Class 6A state title…Thomas Dorminy, a junior pitcher, was the Hillsborough County Pitcher of the Year after posting a 12-0 record with a 1.04 ERA and 121 strikeouts in 74.1 innings pitched. He also had a no-hitter in the playoffs against Melbourne…Other all-county players included sophomore pitcher Jose Fernandez (7-1, 2.98 ERA, 73 Ks), and junior infielder Tyler Ding (.463, eight DBL, 4 HRs, 34 RBI). Seniors Ray Delphey (P), Adam Pendleton ( C), and Casey Smith (Ut) were on the second team.

6. Socorro (El Paso, Texas), 35-4
Highlights: Defeated Lufkin 12-7 for first Class 5A state championship…The Bulldogs landed four players on the Texas Baseball Coaches 5A all-state team, including Tavi Amperan (P, Sr, 10-1, .462), Bobby Mares (3B, Sr, .381, 10-1) and Cory Falvey (OF, Sr, .434, 19 HR) on the first team and Jessiray Navarrette (C, Sr, .495) on the third team.

Who Returns: Only three players return for the Bulldogs next year with Angel Soria (OF, Jr, .318) the only one with significant playing time.
7. Pendleton (Bradenton, Fla.), 31-1
Highlights: Did not compete in state playoffs, but had a win over Florida 5A state champion South Fork…Won four tournaments including the Seminole Hittin Academy Invitational, the Seminole Georgiadis Spring Break Tournament, the Westminster National Classic and the Bud Roth Tournament…Won first 29 games of the season…John Ryan Murphy led team with .627 batting average, 66 RBI, 17 doubles and 11 home runs. Blaze Tart and Jimmy O’Neill were both 8-0 on the mound.

8. Owasso (Okla.), 35-4
Highlights: Defeated Santa Fe 10-1 for fourth straight Class 6A state championship…Austin Kirk (P/OF, 9-1, 0.45 ERA, 111 Ks, .408, 50 RBI) was named the Player of the Year in the Tulsa Metro All-Stars and on the Oklahoma All-Big City team. Brandon Bargas (P, Sr, 7-3, 1.30 ERA, 87 Ks) was the pitcher of the year on the Metro All-Stars while Jessie Baird, Ryan Mayfield (OF, Sr, .447) and Caleb Compton (DH, Sr, .462, 10 HR, 49 RBI) also made the team. Others earning all-conference recognition included Logan Dallis (1B, Sr), Zach Hupp (2B, Sr), Brad Rogers (3B, Sr), Austen Colt (SS, Sr) and Ryan Wilson (OF, Jr)

9. Menchville (Newport News, Va.), 26-2
Highlights: Defeated Hanover 7-1 for Class AAA state championship…The Monarchs had five players selected to the Daily News All-Area team, including Ethan Carter (P, Sr, 11-1, 1.17 ERA, 100 Ks), Austin Chrismon (P, Jr, 8-0), Matt Armstead (OF, Sr, .440, 5 HR), and Jharel Cotton (OF, Sr, .415, 3 HR) on the first team and Jeff Gray (C, Soph) on the second team.

Who Returns: The Monarchs return eight players next year to help defend their state title, topped by Gray and Chrismon.

10. Texas (Texarkana, Texas), 30-7
Highlights: Defeated Moody 4-3 for 4A state championship…Had three players make the all-state team, including Slade Heathcott in the outfield (.472, 46 RBI, 12 DBL, 9 HR, first team), Josh Turley at pitcher (10-2, 138 Ks, 1st team) and Randal Fant at pitcher (8-3, 101 Ks, 3rd team). Turley was named District 13-4A MVP while Logan Preston was the sophomore of the year. Fant and Carlton Bailey were first team all-district while Heathcott and Nathan Sorenson were second team.

11. Moody (Corpus Christi, Texas), 37-4
Highlights: Fell to Texas 4-3 in Class 4A state championship game…Four Trojans earned all-state honors by the Texas Baseball Coaches Association, including Justin Meza (P, Sr, 16-1, .390), Rudy Flores (OF, Sr, .465) and Christian Gallegos (SS, Sr, .480) on the first team and Andrew Cantu (P, Sr, 14-1) on the second team. Meza was the District 30-4A player of the year while Cantu, Gerardo Gutierrez (1B, Sr, .350), Michael Franco (2B, Jr, .410), Gallegos, Flores, AJ Longoria (OF, Sr, .408) and Kyle Mungia (DH, Soph, .339) were first team and Ray Herrera (P, Jr, .286), Marcus Villanueva (C, Soph, .405), and Justin Perales (1B, Soph, .459) were second team.

Who Returns: The Trojans return 11 next year, including a strong core led by Villanueva, Franco, Mungia, Perales and Herrera.
12. Rocky Mountain (Fort Collins, Colo.), 22-4
Highlights: Defeated Mountain Vista 10-1 for Class 5A state championship…Shortstop Bryan Peters(.422, 6 DBL, 9 HR, 30 RBI) was selected as the Gatorade State Player of the Year and was joined on the Denver Post’s All-Colorado team by Jake Stewart (.511, 50 RBI, 5 DBL, 11 HR, OF) and Marco Gonzales (P, 54 Ks). Stewart was the Post’s MVP. The trio also made the All-5A team while teammates Chris Roglen (.460, 5 HRs, OF), Pierce Trumper (.424, Ut) and Luke White (.369, 9 DBL, 4 HRs, IF) were all honorable mention.

Who Returns: Gonzalez, Roglen, Trumper, and White, all juniors, return next year. The Lobos have 13 returning lettermen in 2010.
13. Desert Ridge (Mesa, Ariz.), 29-5
Highlights: Defeated Horizon 9-8 for Class 5A Div. II state title…Jake Barrett (P, Sr, .489, 17 HR) was the state player of the year by the Arizona Coaches Association and was also the Pima Region MVP. He was joined on the all-region team by Steven Bier (Sr, 446, 12 HR), Jerry Kleman (Sr, .467), Alex Villar (Sr, .495), Travis Flores (Jr, .436, 5 HR), Kris Ashby (Sr), and Russell Vaughn (Jr, .311). Kyle Raidy (Jr, .352), Taylor Kaczmarek (Jr., 391) and Zack Odom (Sr, .500) were honorable mention.

14. Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), 39-5
Highlights: Defeated Mount Juliet 2-1 for second straight AAA state title…Curt Powell (SS, Sr) was named the Gatorade state player of the year after batting over .500 with 39 RBI and eight home runs. The Admirals lose 10 seniors, including All-Metro picks Cade Stallings (IF, Sr) and Jordan Cooper (P, Sr).

Who Returns: The Admirals return 17 players next year, but will not have head coach Tom Pharr, who has taken a position at another school. Top returning player is Phillip Pfeifer (P, Soph) who was 12-2 with 138 strikeouts and a 1.25 ERA.
15. Cartersville (Ga.), 30-5
Highlights: Defeated Columbus 10-7 for Class AAA championship…Besides being the first high school player taken in the MLB draft, Donavan Tate was also All-District by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association after batting .474 with 12 doubles, 9 home runs and 41 RBI. The Hurricanes also lose Ben Bridges (P), Garison Boston, Adam Thurman, Hank Stewart, Cole Payne, Patrick Boling, Tyler Williams and Tracey Prouty from a senior-dominated club.

16. Capistrano Valley (Mission Viejo, Calif.), 27-6
Highlights: Defeated Edison of Huntington Beach 1-0 for Southern Section Div. 1 championship…Tyler Matzek was named the Southland MVP by the L.A. Times and was the Southern Section Division 1 MVP as well. Matzek, who was 13-1 overall with 106 strikeouts and five shutouts with 0.97 ERA, was also the South Coast League MVP. He was joined on the all-league team by Nolan Clark (.261) and Peter Hoyt (.310, 4 HR) on the first team and Jordan Castro (.293), Steve McMichael (.385, 4 HR) and Kevin Chambers (.309, 10 DBLs) on the second team.

Who Returns: The Cougars were a senior-dominated group with 11 on the 19-man roster. Kyle Hunt (SS, Soph, .230) saw the most extensive game time of any returning player, although Josh Huntzinger (C, Jr, .455), Eddie DuPont (RHP, Jr, 1-0, 1.02 ERA) and Lee Casas (RHP, Jr, 1-0, 7 Ks in 14 ABs) played well in limited action.
17. Chatsworth (Los Angeles, Calif.), 30-4
Highlights: Topped Cleveland of Reseda 9-0 for the Los Angeles City Section Div. 1 championship…Mike Renner (P, Sr, 10-2, 1.44 ERA) was named the Los Angeles City Section player of the year and was joined on the All-City team by Carlos Escobar (C, Sr), Andrew Klausmeier (OF, Sr), Kasey Toven (SS, Sr) and Andy Weissberg (OF, Sr). Other all-league players include Ryan Cooperstone (3B, Sr), Shawn Meusborn (2B, Sr) and Derek Neely (DH, Jr).

Highlights: Fell to Moody 14-4 in Region IV championship game…Jordan John (P, Sr, 13-0, 145 Ks, 0.26 ERA) was named to the Texas Baseball Coaches 4A all-state team and was also the District 31-4A MVP. Roland Resendez (1B, Jr, .388, HR), Matt Garza (2B, Sr, .500, 30 RBI, 11 DBL, 3 HR), Jacob Hubert (OF, Sr, .367, 37 RBI), Wyatt Mathisen (Newcomer of the Year, Fr, .407, 54 RBI, 5 HR), Rob Zastryzny (DH/P, Jr, .325, 40 RBI, 5 HR, 9-4, 98 Ks) and Adam Hoelscher (Ut, Sr, .345, 4-1) were all named to the first team while Dustin Vaughn (SS, Sr, .320) and Hunter Whetsell (OF, Jr, .339, 4 HR) were on the second team. 19. Columbus (Ga.), 33-4
Highlights: Fell to Cartersville 10-7 in AAA state championship game…Taylor Wolfe and Matt Taylor were the top two senior players for the Blue Devils this year. Taylor was 13-1 heading into the state finals with a 0.93 ERA. He also batted .430 with eight home runs and 42 RBI. Wolfe had a 9-1 record with a 2.50 ERA. He batted .420 with 48 RBI and nine home runs.
Drafted: Matt Taylor, P/OF, Round 50, Pirates.
Who Returns: The Blue Devils return 19 players from this year’s roster.
20. South Fork (Stuart, Fla.), 30-4
Highlights: Defeated Chiles 13-3 for 5A state championship…South Fork had five players on the All-Treasure Conference team, including Nick Zaharion (1B, Sr), Robert Bednar (3B, Sr, .455, 27 RBI), Brandon Bednar (SS, Jr, .404, 37 RBI, 7 HR), Mike Beck (OF, Sr, .429), and Tyson Young (P, Sr, 10-1, 0.85 ERA, 78 Ks, .453). Ryan Breen (C, Sr, .412, 9 DBL, 3 HR), Trevor Lawson (OF, Jr, .377) and Kyle Hunter (P, Sr, 10-0, 1.36 ERA, 92 Ks, 5 HR) made the second team and Nick Guillote (Sr, .302) was honorable mention. Zaharion was also the Treasure Coast Player of the Year after batting .488 with four HRs, 14 DBls, and 31 RBI.

Highlights: Lost to Alonso 1-0 in 6A state semifinals…Nick Franklin (SS, Sr, .538, 11 HR) was the Central Florida player of the year and was joined on the first team by Josh Tanski (Ut, Sr, .309). Franklin and Tanski also made the Seminole All-District team along with Eric Sams (IF, Jr, .360).

Who Returns: The Patriots return nine players, including Sams, but lose 13 seniors. Other returnees include Justin Milner (OF, Jr, .293) and Tyler Krider (OF, Jr, .293)

22. Bolles (Jacksonville, Fla.), 31-4
Highlights: Defeated American Heritage 14-4 for 3A state championship…Mark Lumpa (P, Jr, 11-0, 69 Ks, 0.87 ERA) was a huge factor all year for the Bulldogs. Caleb Denmark (3B, Jr) led the offense, batting .462 with 49 RBI and 9 HRs. Other offensive leaders included David Perkins (2B, Jr, .375, 38 RBI, 4 HR), Niko Fraser (OF, Sr, .414, 25 RBI), Michael Spence (P/1B, Jr, .351, 5 HR), Austin Slater (SS, Soph, .398, 5 HR) and Hayden Hurst (1B, Fr, .290, 4 HR).

Who Returns: The Bulldogs should be the state favorites again next year with Lumpa, Denmark, Perkins, Spence, Slater and Hurst all returning. Bolles has 17 lettermen back next year.
23. Richland (Wash.), 24-2
Highlights: Defeated Puyallup 4-3 for Class 4A state championship…Brett Jacobs (SS, Sr, .429, 32 RBI, 4 HR) was the Cascade Player of the Year while Stinson Ott (P, Sr, 7-0, 1.66 ERA) was the pitcher of the year. Also making the all-league first team were Cody Shepherd (1B/P, Sr, 4-1, 1.15 ERA), Josh Rapacz (C, .Sr, 407), Jamison Rowe (OF, Sr, 3 HR), Quinn Zorich (OF, Sr, .413), and Eric Yardley (P, Sr, .480). Named to the second team were Dan Jacobs (2B, Sr), Chris Cecil (OF, Jr, .429), and Kyle Stumetz (P, Sr, 4-0, 1.60 ERA). Jacobs, Shepherd, and Rapacz made the all-state first team. Jacobs was also the Tri-City player of the year.

24. Hartselle (Ala.), 50-9
Highlights: Defeated Briarwood Christian 4-0 for the Class 5A state title…Luke Bole (DH, Sr, .412, 73 RBI, 20 HR) and Chad Girodo (P, Sr, 17-1, 136 Ks), were both named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association Super State squad with Bolle earning player of the year honors. Both were also selected to the 5A first team while Josh Doyle (OF, Sr, .331, 33 RBI) and Ryan Joy (OF, Jr, .377, 54 RBI, 13 HR) were named honorable mention.

Who Returns: Joy will return to Hartselle next year. The Tigers return 11 players, including Robert Reece (IF, Jr, .331, 10 HR) and Jake Wallace (OF, Jr, .533).
25 Madison Central (Madison, Miss.), 27-4
Highlights: Defeated Petal 3-2 for Class 5A state championship…Brayden Jones (P, Jr) was named to the all-state team by the Clarion Ledger and was also selected as the All-Metro player of the year in the Jackson area. He batted .413 with 7 HR and was 9-2 with a 1.53 ERA and 72 Ks. Jared Rutland (C, Sr, .284) was also All-Metro

Highlights: Fell to Capistrano Valley 1-0 in Southern Section Div. 1 championship game…Donald Sneed (.344, 7 HR) was named the MVP of the Sunset League and was All-Orange County. Kurt Heyer (11-3, 116 Ks, 4 shutous) was the Pitcher of the Year. Also making the all-league team were Henry Owens (9-1, 87 Ks), and Ryan Lyttle (2B, .341). Kyle Jones (IF, .370), Chris Czerniachowski (OF, .330) and Eric Snyder (OF, .354, 3 HR) made the second team. Owens was also honored on the LA Times All-Southland team.

Highlights: Lost to Edison 2-1 in Southern Section Div. 1 semifinals…Aaron Northcraft (.362, 3 HR, 10-2, 70 Ks, 1.55 ERA) was All-Orange County, All-Southern Section Div. 1 and MVP of the Trinity League. Brian Frattali (1B, .352) was also all-county, all-Southern Section and all-league. Also making all-league were Derek Campbell (SS, .340, 7 HR) and Cory Hahn (OF, .367, 6 HR) on the first team and Ian McCarthy (P, 3-2), Kevin Francke (2B, .295) and Matt Blanchard (3B, 4-1) on the second team.

Highlights: Topped South Forsyth 3-0 for Class AAAAA state championship…Jake Montgomery (1B/P, Sr, .340, 7 HR, 10-1) was named the Cobb County player of the year and was joined on the first team by Will Kendall (P, Jr, 7-1, 1.56 ERA, 55 K), and Matt Lane (P, SR, 8-3, 1.00 ERA, 99 Ks).
