Early-season tilt holds national championship implications.

After dominant starts to the 2025 season, No. 2 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and No. 4 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, Md.) collide Friday in the MaxPreps Game of the Week.

St. Frances Academy opened its season with a signature win against then-No. 7 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) 42-13 in the Broward County National Football Showcase.

The Panthers ran for 320 yards behind Sa’Nir Brooks and Jaylen Burke. Wide receiver Jesse Legree caught two touchdowns from quarterback Jae'Oyn Williams. The St. Frances defense, led by five-star prospects Zion Elee and Jireh Edwards, was suffocating. Three-star Maryland pledge Khmari Bing returned an interception for a touchdown.

St. Frances Academy started the 2024 season with a 2-3 record against a national schedule that included losses to Duncanville (Texas) and Mater Dei. The Panthers then ripped off six straight wins, including a 30-3 victory over IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) to finish the season 8-3 with a No. 11 national ranking.

St. John Bosco is 2-0 after big wins over Manatee (Bradenton, Fla.) and Eastwood (El Paso, Texas). Sophomore quarterback Koa Malau'ulu has thrown three touchdowns in each game. D.J. Tubbs leads the star-studded receiving corp with three touchdowns while Madden Williams and Daniel Odom each have two this season.

Malau'ulu took over the starting job for St. John Bosco in the sixth game of his freshman year. He led the Braves to wins over league rivals Orange Lutheran (Orange) and Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) in both the regular season and playoffs. His only losses were to eventual national champion Mater Dei (Santa Ana).

Bosco has more top 10 national finishes than any program in the country over the past decade.

The MaxPreps social media team will be on campus for Game of the Week to highlight top players, behind-the-scenes action and showcase what makes high school football special. Calling the game will be Jeff Kurtz alongside MaxPreps National Football Editor Zack Poff.
