The Cairo-Durham Mustangs will challenge the Catskill Cats at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Cairo-Durham is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Cairo-Durham took a loss when they played away from home on Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over Watervliet. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since May 2, 2025.
Jake Young made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Cairo-Durham let Michael Pernice and Kayden Higgins run wild. Pernice went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI, while Higgins went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Catskill couldn't beat Chatham on Friday even though they stacked four runs on them in the third inning. The Cats fell 9-5 to the Panthers. The loss continues a trend for the Cats in their meetings with the Panthers: they've now lost five in a row.
Catskill also got a good showing from Lucas Paquette, who tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.
On the hitting side, Catskill saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sawyer Bulich, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Cairo-Durham pushed their record up to 7-4 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.7 runs over those games. As for Catskill, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Cairo-Durham has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Catskill struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Cairo-Durham beat Catskill 7-2 when the teams last played back in April. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cats turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
