Baseball Game Preview: Laney Buccaneers vs. Topsail Pirates

The Laney Buccaneers will challenge the Topsail Pirates at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Laney will be looking to extend their current 14-game winning streak.

Laney had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt North Brunswick on Tuesday. The Buccaneers' pitchers stepped up to hand the Scorpions a 6-0 shutout. Considering the Buccaneers have won eight matches by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

TJ Ziermann made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over 6.1 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with one triple and two RBI.

In other batting news, Laney let Carston Wedemeyer and Jack Holliman run wild. Wedemeyer went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs, while Holliman went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. That's the most hits Holliman has posted since back in March.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 11 runs the game before, Topsail was a bit more limited in their game on Tuesday. They fell just short of Hoggard by a score of 2-1. The Pirates' loss signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Laney pushed their record up to 18-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Topsail, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-10.

Laney beat Topsail 6-1 in their previous matchup on April 1st. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Buccaneers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
