Calhoun is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. After each having a week off, they and the La Vernia Bears will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:00 p.m. After the two teams made easy work of their previous opponents, one won't be so lucky on Friday.
La Vernia will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: Calhoun extended their winning streak to three last Friday. The Sandcrabs claimed a resounding 29-0 victory over Varsity Opponent. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Sandcrabs just coasted through the last quarter.
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led La Vernia over Marble Falls in every quarter on their way to victory last Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Bears blew the Mustangs out of the water with a 63-21 final score. Considering the Bears have won three matchups by more than 41 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Calhoun better focus on containing COOPER NULL and TY CARTER as the pair were huge in La Vernia's win. NULL rushed for 121 yards and a pair of scores on only nine carries, while CARTER rushed for 187 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.8 yards per carry. With that strong performance, NULL is now averaging an impressive 102.8 rushing yards per game. La Vernia also got help from WYATT FRANK, who showed off his sure hands for 85 receiving yards.
La Vernia was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 385 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 179 rushing yards in 13 consecutive contests dating back to last season.
La Vernia didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of VINCENT CAPPARELLI and MATTHEW LINDSEY. La Vernia got some further help from KOLE FARMER: he picked up two sacks and made nine total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Calhoun's win bumped their record up to 2-3. As for La Vernia, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Calhoun has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 178.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like La Vernia struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 243.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Calhoun couldn't quite finish off La Vernia when the teams last played back in November of 2024 and fell 24-21. Can the Sandcrabs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
