Volleyball Preview: Cheverus Stags vs. South Portland Red Riots
Cheverus hasn't had much luck against South Portland recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Cheverus Stags will head out to square off against the South Portland Red Riots at 6:00 p.m.
Cheverus is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Maine's top teams: Falmouth, who was ranked ninth in their home state at the time (Cheverus was ranked 24th). Cheverus fell just short of Falmouth by a score of 3-2 on Thursday. The Stags have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Meanwhile, South Portland had just enough and edged Sanford out 3-2 on Thursday.
South Portland took Sanford into a fifth set where they got it done with a four-point win. The match finished with set scores of 22-25, 25-14, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11.
South Portland can attribute much of their success to Kaley Moller, who had six digs and five aces. Those five aces gave Moller a new career-high.
She wasn't the only good server: South Portland was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 18 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least eight aces in seven consecutive matches.
Cheverus' defeat dropped their record down to 3-8. As for South Portland, their record is now 5-6.
