Softball Recap: DeKalb Barons vs. Garrett Railroaders
DeKalb had lost three straight at home, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 5-5 to make it four. They fell 7-3 to the Garrett Railroaders. The Barons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Railroaders apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.
Summer Haverstock was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Haverstock was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI.
Haverstock wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Serena Wineland, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
As for Garrett, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-2. The game was the first time they have beaten DeKalb on their field since April 22, 2017.
On Garrett's side, Ashlee Vanderbosch spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks. Vanderbosch has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Atalie Gullett was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Sarah DePew was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases.
DeKalb wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 3-2 win against Churubusco on the 26th. As for Garrett, they will head out to take on Fremont at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
