Basketball Recap: Watervliet Takes a Loss

Watervliet managed to keep up with Fennville until halftime on Friday, but things quickly went downhill from there. The Watervliet Panthers lost 48-24 to the Fennville Blackhawks. The Panthers were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Blackhawks earlier this season, when they won 39-29.

Despite the defeat, Watervliet saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Daijahnae Hatcher posted six points. Leila Liberto Taylor also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Even though they lost, Watervliet smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 15 consecutive contests.

Watervliet's loss dropped their record down to 8-13. As for Fennville, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-10.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Watervliet will venture away from home to face off against Black River at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Watervliet is facing Black River at the right time seeing as Black River is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Fennville, they will head out to take on Saugatuck at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing is sure in Saugatuck's favor as the squad sits on eight straight wins at home while Fennville has been banged up by five consecutive losses on the road.
