Baseball Game Preview: Spoto Spartans vs. Middleton Tigers

The Spoto Spartans will take on the Middleton Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Spoto hasn't scored more than two runs for four games straight, a trend the squad is eager to reverse.

Spoto came into this matchup off a tough six-run defeat on Friday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Lennard by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Spartans have suffered against the Longhorns since April 20, 2017.

Spoto got a good showing from Kelvin Ochoa, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Ochoa has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Spoto saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Na'Im Salter, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. The Spartans are 2-1 when Salter posts two or more runs, but 8-12 otherwise.

Meanwhile, Middleton lost 12-4 to Chamberlain on Tuesday. The Tigers have struggled against the Storm recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.

Dayvin Fisher was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Tate Hancock, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Spoto's defeat dropped their record down to 10-13. As for Middleton, their loss dropped their record down to 4-17.

Spoto took their victory against Middleton when the teams last played back in February of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Tigers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
