Smoky Valley Home Educators fought the good fight in their overtime matchup against the Newton HomeSchool Panthers on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They opened the new year with a less-than-successful 87-83 loss to they. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.

Jaquale Schumm continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Newton HomeSchool, dropping a double-double on 51 points and 41 rebounds. That makes it six consecutive games in which Schumm has scored at least 25% of Newton HomeSchool's points. Another player making a difference was Alex Bungard, who scored 20 points along with eight assists and five rebounds.

Smoky Valley Home Educators has been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-4 record this season. As for Newton HomeSchool, their win bumped their record up to 2-4.
