Football Recap: Mt. Vernon Find Success

Mt. Vernon proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 42) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They slipped by the Watkins Memorial Warriors 28-27. For the Yellowjackets, this counts as revenge for the 27-21 win the Warriors walked away with the last time they faced one another back in October of 2024.

Mason Richards was his usual excellent self, rushing for 193 yards and one touchdown while picking up 8.0 yards per carry, and also throwing for 16 yards and one TD. Landon Dawson was in the mix as well, providing Mt. Vernon with two scores.

Another reason for the win was Mt. Vernon's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. Leading the way was Cash Ewers with two.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Mt. Vernon, bringing their record up to 5-2. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 35.8 points over those games. As for Watkins Memorial, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-5 record this season.

Mt. Vernon and Watkins Memorial should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Yellowjackets will take on Licking Heights at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (199 vs. 424). Meanwhile, Watkins Memorial (ranked 203rd) will meet Zanesville (ranked 528th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
