Recap: Cabrillo Conquistadores vs. Pioneer Valley Panthers
The Cabrillo Conquistadores had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Tuesday. They snuck past Pioneer Valley with a 62-57 victory. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Pioneer Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Thomas Zepeda, who scored 14 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Zepeda has scored all season. David Lopez was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Cabrillo has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 13 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. As for Pioneer Valley, their loss dropped their record down to 11-15.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cabrillo will square off against Orcutt Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The timing isn't great for Orcutt Academy: they have been struggling with five straight losses at home, while Cabrillo has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road. As for Pioneer Valley, they will square off against Santa Maria at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Santa Maria knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 17 matchups -- so hopefully Pioneer Valley likes a good challenge.
