Northeastern recap Oct. 3, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Hope Academy, who took down 430th ranked Christian Life, 56-27.
Luther North was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in Northeastern. The Wildcats beat Chicago International Charter-Longwood Academy 50-12 earlier in the week.
Hiawatha's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Mike Mercado threw for 164 yards and Allen Letterer had 101 yards receiving. On the ground Dale Steinhorst chipped in 28 yards. Derek Ross helped Hiawatha's passing attack out by catching four balls for 34 yards.
Hiawatha's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Hawks feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Mercado has thrown for 635 yards and three touchdowns this season, while Letterer has 13 catches for 214 yards. Dakotah Quimby leads the league in rushing with 323 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Hope Academy takes on North Shore Country Day. As it stands, Stephen Pagh's team is in fifth, while the Raiders are in second.
Hope Academy moved up to 461 from 493 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Northeastern. A 56-27 win over the Eagles helped Hope Academy improve its standing.
