High school football: No. 1 St. John Bosco vs. No. 2 Mater Dei showdown features 70 players with at least one FBS offer

By Zack Poff Oct 4, 2022, 10:00am

Southern California powers have a combined 48 players rated as a three-star or higher by 247Sports.

The talent will be out in force when the biggest high school football game of the 2022 season kicks off Friday between No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) and No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) at Santa Ana Bowl.

Every time these two SoCal powers lock horns it features some of the best talent in the country and fans are ready as the game sold out in less than five minutes on Monday. There are a combined 70 players in this game who have landed at least one FBS offer: St. John Bosco has 38 while the Monarchs have 32.

This is be the first national No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup since 2019 when D.J. Uiagalelei led St. John Bosco to a 39-34 comeback win against Bryce Young and Mater Dei in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 championship. The Braves finished that year as the No. 1 team in the final MaxPreps Top 25 after beating De La Salle (Concord) 49-28 in the CIF Open Division state championship.

Some notable players for this year's Braves include five-star edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei, who is also a matchup nightmare at tight end. They also have four seniors committed to Louisville — Pierce Clarkson, DeAndre Moore, Aaron Williams and Jahlil McClain.

They are loaded in the Class of 2024 as well and have three players rated in the top-100 overall in Peyton Woodyard, Kyngstonn Viliamu and Marcelles Williams.

Mater Dei's Leviticus Su'a is the only four-star in the Class of 2023 on 247Sports and is the leader for one of the best defenses in high school football. Some other senior standouts include three-stars B.J. Tolo, Jordan Onovughe and Lipe Moala.

The Monarchs have 15 players in the Class of 2024 rated as a three-star recruit or higher led by Elijah Brown, DeAndre Carter, Brandon Baker, Aydin Breland, Zabien Brown and Nathaniel Frazier.

Don't expect these two SoCal powers to fall off anytime soon because they have a combined 22 players who have landed at least one FBS offer already from the Classes of 2025 and 2026.
