Baseball Game Preview: Sun Valley Spartans vs. Weddington Warriors

The Sun Valley Spartans will face off against the Weddington Warriors at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sun Valley will be looking to extend their current four-game winning streak.

Sun Valley will bounce into Thursday's match after beating Cuthbertson, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Spartans walked away with a 5-2 victory over the Cavaliers on Tuesday.

Keller Weaver spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on ten hits. He is becoming a predictor of Sun Valley's success: when he allows at most two earned runs the team is 6-2 (and 8-9 when he doesn't).

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Braxton McGinniss, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Ayden Matzke also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Meanwhile, Weddington faced Marvin Ridge in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Warriors put the hurt on the Mavericks with a sharp 10-2 win. Considering the Warriors have won ten games by more than seven runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

The victory (which was Weddington's third in a row) raised their record to 17-7-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Sun Valley, their record now sits at 14-11.

Sun Valley couldn't quite get it done against Weddington when the teams last played back in April as they fell 8-4. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
