Baseball Game Preview: Rhea County Golden Eagles vs. Walker Valley Mustangs

For the first time this season, Rhea County will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They are taking a road trip to take on the Walker Valley Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Rhea County will be strutting in after a win while Walker Valley will be coming in after a loss.

Rhea County lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Sale Creek, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Friday's game. Rhea County put the hurt on Sale Creek with a sharp 19-1 victory on Friday. The contest marked the Golden Eagles' most dominant win of the season so far.

Corydon Butler made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Butler was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Rhea County let Casen Kinney and Reese Pendergrass run wild. Kinney scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Pendergrass scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. Rhea County is 2-1 when Kinney posts two or more runs, but 2-7 otherwise. Ethan Mosley also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Rhea County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .480. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in three consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, after soaring to 13 runs the game before, Walker Valley was a bit more limited in their game on Saturday. They fell just short of The Villages Charter by a score of 3-2. The Mustangs' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

Walker Valley's loss dropped their record down to 7-7. As for Rhea County, their victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-8.

Rhea County came up short against Walker Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024, falling 9-5. Can Rhea County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
