Baseball Recap: North Newton Turns Things Around After Road Loss

There's no place like home for North Newton, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They put the hurt on the North White Vikings with a sharp 13-5 victory on Tuesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Spartans considering their one-run performance the matchup before.

Koye Viers and Hunter Crabtree made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Viers tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off four hits. Meanwhile, Crabtree tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Viers also tossed a walk, which is notable because North Newton is 4-2 when he allows at most one walk, but 3-10 otherwise. At bat, Viers went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, while Crabtree went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Viers has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Bryce Gibson was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of North Newton's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 4-11 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Preston Boezeman, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

North Newton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .407. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

North Newton pushed their record up to 7-12 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for North White, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-9.

North Newton will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Vikings: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
