Baseball Game Preview: Alexander Central Cougars vs. South Caldwell Spartans

The Alexander Central Cougars will head out to face off against the South Caldwell Spartans at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Alexander Central comes in on three and South Caldwell on nine.

On Friday, Alexander Central needed a bit of extra time to put away Watauga. They won by a run and slipped past the Pioneers 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Cougars have posted since February 25th.

Dillion Church looked comfortable as he struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Gavin Bentley, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Maddix Reese, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Alexander Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, South Caldwell got themselves on the board against Freedom on Friday, but Freedom never followed suit. They put the hurt on the Patriots with a sharp 10-0 victory. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by eight runs or more this season.

South Caldwell's win was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-0. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Alexander Central, their record is now 6-4.

Alexander Central took their win against South Caldwell in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 11-2. Will Alexander Central repeat their success, or does South Caldwell has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
