Basketball Recap: St. Mary Academy-Bay View Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with Portsmouth

On Tuesday, St. Mary Academy-Bay View faced Portsmouth in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The St. Mary Academy-Bay View Bengals fell 45-35 to the Portsmouth Patriots. The Bengals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Patriots apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why St. Mary Academy-Bay View lost, don't look at Qiana Sumner. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Sumner continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last five games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Genesis Castro, who posted six points and six boards.

Even though they lost, St. Mary Academy-Bay View smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in five consecutive matches.

Portsmouth's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Annie Hurd led the charge by dropping a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds. That's the most boards Hurd has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Gyselle Mairs, who put up 13 points along with three steals and three blocks.

St. Mary Academy-Bay View's record now sits at 10-7. As for Portsmouth, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 11-5.

Looking ahead, St. Mary Academy-Bay View will square off against Barrington at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Portsmouth, they will face off against West Warwick at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
