Baseball Recap: Riverside Starts Season with Victory at Home

Riverside took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Trinity Christian Academy Lions, sneaking past 5-4. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Peyton Kirk spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up nine Ks. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Landon Vaughan, who scored two runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Cole Yarbro, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.

Trinity Christian Academy's loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Riverside Panthers challenge Lexington Tigers at 6:05 p.m. on Monday. As for Trinity Christian Academy, they will take on Milan at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The last three games Trinity Christian Academy has played (dating back to last season) have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
