Basketball Recap: Leake Central Snags Seventh Win in Last Nine Games

Leake Central posted their closest win since December 6, 2024 on Friday. They skirted past the Northeast Lauderdale Trojans 62-59. Given the Gators 's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while the Trojans are ranked 64th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Several Trojans players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Bj Portis, who went 6 for 13 on his way to 16 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Steven Lightsey, who went 5 of 10 en route to 12 points along with seven boards and six assists.

Leake Central has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season. As for Northeast Lauderdale, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-10.

Leake Central will take on Louisville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Leake Central knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 21 games -- so hopefully Louisville likes a good challenge. As for Northeast Lauderdale, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 60-42 victory against Kemper County on the 25th.
