High school basketball: Coaching win leaders from each state

By Kevin Askeland Jan 14, 2021, 12:30pm

Virginia leader Steve Smith moves up to No. 3 on national list; Charles Smith of Louisiana is newest state leader.

Steve Smith of Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), the all-time wins leader in Virginia, is now the No. 3 all-time wins leader in high school basketball history with 1,187 victories. With three wins the past week, Smith moved past Bob Hurley of St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.), New Jersey's leader with 1,185 wins.

Smith and Hurley are two of the names on MaxPreps' list of the all-time boys basketball wins leaders from each state. Among the most recent to take over as the all-time leader in their respective states include Charles Smith of Peabody (La.), J.R. Holmes of Bloomington South (Ind.) and Richard Duease of Madison Ridgeland Academy (Miss.)

Charles Smith won the eighth state title in his 35-year coaching career last season, while also claiming the distinction of becoming the all-time wins leader in Louisiana with 1,075. Smith surpassed Joel Hawkins of Southern Lab (1,071 wins) during the playoffs.

Holmes overtook Jack Butcher of Loogotee at the end of 2019 and then went 27-0 in 2020. COVID-19 prevented Indiana from finishing its state tournament, however, preventing Holmes from possibly winning a third state title.

Duease overtook Norris Ashley of Ingomar as the all-time boys leader in Mississippi in 2017 and has 1,119 boys wins (he also won 592 games as a girls coach early in his career) including a 12-2 record in 2021.

Steve Smith, Duease and Charles Smith are three of 17 coaches who have at least 1,000 career wins. Robert Hughes of Fort Worth Dunbar (Texas) is the all-time leader with 1,333 wins while Morgan Wootten of DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) is second with 1,274 wins and Bob Hurley of St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) is fourth with 1,185.

Source for the list include the National Federation of High Schools Record Book, state association websites and various newspapers researched via newspapers.com. In some cases, only win totals were available. The school where the coach won the majority of his games is the one listed.
Steve Smith of Oak Hill Academy moved into third place on the all-time basketball coaching wins list in addition to being the winningest coach in Virginia.
