Recap: New Bern Bears vs. Apex Cougars

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but the New Bern Bears had no problem doing just that on Friday. They strolled past Apex with points to spare, taking the game 51-35. Winning may never get old, but New Bern sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead New Bern to victory, but perhaps none more so than Emmanuel Johnson, who threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns while completing 81% of his passes. Another player making a difference was Karvin Magwood, who rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.5 yards per carry.

When it comes to explaining why Apex lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jayvion Danzy. Despite the final result, he rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns. Danzy has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last ten times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Chase Klingemann, who threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

New Bern pushed their record up to 6-6 with that victory, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season. They've been dominating during the matchups in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 31.63 points. As for Apex, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-4 record this season.

New Bern will be playing in front of their home fans against New Hanover at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Apex does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
