Softball Game Preview: Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights vs. Martins Ferry Purple Riders

The Wheeling Central Catholic Maroon Knights will be taking part in a tournament against the Martins Ferry Purple Riders at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Wheeling Central Catholic's pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so Martins Ferry's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

Wheeling Central Catholic is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: University, who was ranked eighth at the time (Wheeling Central Catholic was ranked 18th). The Maroon Knights fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 5-3 last Thursday. The Maroon Knights have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, Martins Ferry made easy work of Union Local on Thursday and carried off an 11-4 win. The Purple Riders might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 matches by seven runs or more this season.

The victory made it two in a row for Martins Ferry and bumps their season record up to 19-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 7 runs in those games. As for Wheeling Central Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-5.

Wheeling Central Catholic couldn't quite get it done against Martins Ferry in their previous meeting last Tuesday as they fell 5-2. Can the Maroon Knights avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
