Baseball Recap: Wednesday's Defeat Ends St. Mary's Winning Streak

St. Mary dropped their record down to 4-3 on Wednesday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They came up short against the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds, falling 17-2. The Knights were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Greyhounds earlier this season, when they won 4-2.

As for New Ulm Cathedral, the victory keeps they at an undefeated 7-0. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 12.7 runs this season.

For New Ulm Cathedral's part, Colin Anderson was a major factor no matter where he played. He pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. Anderson has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, New Ulm Cathedral got a massive performance out of Jake Finstad, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Those four stolen bases gave Finstad a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Elliot Schabert, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI, two runs, and two doubles.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: St. Mary's beat New Ulm Cathedral by a score of 4-2 later that day.
