Basketball Recap: Dugger Union Takes Loss Despite Strong Performances from Sage Stahl and Jordyn Smith

Dugger Union was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 47-37 to the Clay City Eels. The Bulldogs were probably out for revenge after losing 50-29 to them when the teams met back in January of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Dugger Union's loss came despite strong showings from Jordyn Smith and Sage Stahl. Smith posted 21 points along with eight boards and eight steals, while Stahl dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds. Stahl is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 15 games she's played.

Even though they lost, Dugger Union smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in nine consecutive contests.

Clay City was led to victory by Olivia Shidler and Taylor Rhienhart. Shidler went 8 of 20 on her way to 22 points and three steals, while Rhienhart dropped a double-double on ten points and 13 rebounds. Those 22 points gave Shidler a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Abigale Shearer, who put up five points.

Dugger Union's loss dropped their record down to 5-11. As for Clay City, their record now sits at 5-15.

Dugger Union has already played their next match, a 43-30 defeat against Martinsville on the 25th. As for Clay City, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 58-17 loss against Northview on the 28th.
