Football Recap: Dynamic Duo of Justin Sagun and Jayden Bagaygay Lead Cerritos to Victory

The Cerritos Dons sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 31-28 victory over the Canyon Comanches on Thursday. With that win, the Dons brought their scoring average up to 26.8 points per game.

Leading Cerritos to victory were Jayden Bagaygay and Justin Sagun. Bagaygay gained 130 total yards and two touchdowns, while Sagun rushed for 89 yards and one TD on only six carries. Those 89 rushing yards gave Sagun a new career-high.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Cerritos was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 283 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 156 rushing yards in six consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Despite the loss, Canyon still got an impressive performance from Alexander Lundsberg, who threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for 47 yards. Lundsberg was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 60 yards.

Cerritos now has a winning record of 3-2. As for Canyon, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-3.

Cerritos didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 53-17 victory against Wilson on the 25th. As for Canyon, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on El Toro at 7:00 p.m. on the 3rd. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 893 yards in their previous games.
