Basketball Recap: Utica Academy of Science Makes It Six in a Row on the Road

It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Utica Academy of Science ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Proctor Raiders 73-70. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Atoms' disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 382nd, while the Raiders are ranked 169th).

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Utica Academy of Science to victory, but perhaps none more so than Amari Berkley, who went 10 for 23 on his way to 32 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals. Berkley's evening made it six games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Akol Machteng was another key player, dropping a double-double on 17 points and ten boards.

Utica Academy of Science's win was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 6-5. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.8 points per game. As for Proctor, their defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 6-4.

Utica Academy of Science will head out to face off against Syracuse Academy of Science at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Proctor, they will look to defend their home court on January 22nd against West Genesee at 7:00 p.m.
