Baseball Game Preview: Marshall Mavericks vs. New Diana Eagles

The Marshall Mavericks will take on the New Diana Eagles in a tournament on Friday.

Thursday just wasn't the day for Marshall's offense. They took a 4-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of Tatum on Thursday. The Mavericks have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Fans were treated to a battle of the Eagles on Thursday. New Diana came out on top in a nail-biter against Tatum, sneaking past 4-2. New Diana hasn't had any issues with Tatum recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Colt McDowell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on seven hits and racked up seven Ks. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April of 2024.

On the hitting side, Mason Sherman and Levi Green did most of the damage at the plate: Sherman scored two runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances, while Green went 1-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple marked the first that Green hit this season. Another player making a difference was Justice Hankins, who got on base in two of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases.

Marshall's defeat dropped their record down to 3-7. As for New Diana, their victory bumped their record up to 5-2.

Marshall took their win against New Diana in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 9-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for Marshall since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
