Football Recap: Mcdonogh Comes Up Short in High-Profile Contest with Calvert Hall

McDonogh faced Calvert Hall in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Eagles took a 28-21 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cardinals. The Eagles were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in November of 2024.

McDonogh's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Carlos Ferguson, who picked up 98 receiving yards and one TD, and CJ Davis, who picked up 70 receiving yards and one touchdown. Ferguson showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 60 yards.

Leading Calvert Hall to victory were Azuriah A Holmes and Oliver Noll. A Holmes gained 127 total yards and two touchdowns, while Noll threw for 120 yards and one TD on only ten passes. Noll's passing game has become a key predictor of the Cardinals' success: the team is undefeated when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise.

McDonogh moved to 5-2 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Calvert Hall, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-2.

McDonogh will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Concordia Prep at 12:00 p.m. on the 25th. As for Calvert Hall, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 14-13 defeat against St. Mary's on the 17th.
