Basketball Recap: Rusty Hooks' Big Game Can't Quite Lead New Covenant over Hargrave Military Academy

After flying high against Westover Christian Academy last Monday, New Covenant came back down to earth. The New Covenant Gryphons lost 73-51 to the Hargrave Military Academy Tigers on Tuesday. The Gryphons have struggled against the Tigers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.

New Covenant lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Rusty Hooks, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 14 boards. Hooks continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Wyatt Renalds was another key player, going 5 for 8 on his way to 13 points and three steals.

Hargrave Military Academy found their leader in sophomore William Mancine, who shot 9-for-13 from deep and dropped a double-double on 32 points and 12 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Mancine has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Kendall Lanier, who posted ten points and six boards.

New Covenant's defeat dropped their record down to 12-4. As for Hargrave Military Academy, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-12 record this season.

New Covenant has already played their next contest, a 58-48 loss against North Cross on the 23rd. As for Hargrave Military Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 57-53 defeat against Roanoke Catholic on the 23rd.
