The Rincon/University Rangers are taking a road trip to take on the Sunnyside Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Rincon/University has given up an average of 11 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Rincon/University lost 15-1 to Tucson High Magnet School on Thursday.
Sunnyside never got on the board in their matchup on Tuesday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against Marana last Thursday. They walked away with a 13-9 win over the Tigers. The victory continues a trend for the Blue Devils in their matchups with the Tigers: they've now won seven in a row.
Tatyana Vega made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Soleil Ponce, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Vianney Cruz, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-5.
Sunnyside was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Marana only posted a batting average of .310.
Sunnyside pushed their record up to 15-6-1 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.7 runs over those games. As for Rincon/University, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Rincon/University hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .332. However, it's not like Sunnyside struggles in that department as they've averaged .352. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Rincon/University might still be hurting after the 12-2 defeat they got from Sunnyside in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Rangers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
