Baseball Game Preview: Hammond Morton Governors vs. Lowell Red Devils

The Hammond Morton Governors are taking a road trip to challenge the Lowell Red Devils at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hammond Morton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.1 runs per game this season.

On Wednesday, Hammond Morton earned a 12-7 win over Hammond Central. The victory continues a trend for the Governors in their matchups with the Wolves: they've now won four in a row.

The team relied heavily on Marcellous McQuay, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Hammond Morton is 10-2 when McQuay posts two or more runs, but 1-11 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Nate George, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.

Hammond Morton was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Lowell was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They took a 9-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of Hobart.

Hammond Morton's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-13. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.0 runs over those games. As for Lowell, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-15-1.

Hammond Morton suffered a grim 19-0 defeat to Lowell when the teams last played back in May of 2023. Can the Governors avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
