Baseball Recap: Clay Takes a Loss

Clay extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 12-9 in the process. They came up short against the Portsmouth Trojans, falling 14-0. The Panthers were not able to make up for their loss to the Trojans from their previous meeting back in April of 2021.

As for Portsmouth, they are on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-6-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games.

For Portsmouth's part, Jacob Roth made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Roth also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Portsmouth is undefeated when he allows at most two earned runs, but 5-6-1 otherwise. Roth was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.

In other pitching news, Reid Click looked comfortable as he tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (two).

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Camron Williams, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Nik Copley, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Clay will face off against East at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Portsmouth, they will take on Dawson-Bryant at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Trojans are facing the Hornets at the right time seeing as the Hornets are stuck on a six-game losing streak.
