Softball Game Preview: Springfield Wildcats vs. Fairmont Firebirds

Springfield and Fairmont are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Wildcats will take on the Firebirds at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Springfield will be strutting in after a victory while Fairmont will be coming in after a loss.

On Wednesday, Springfield beat Wayne 8-3. That's two games straight that the Wildcats have won by exactly five runs.

Leeauna Rardon spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits.

At the plate, Springfield got a massive performance out of Jazzdyn Frock, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Frock has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Caelyn Cave, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Northmont hit Fairmont with a four-run seventh inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Firebirds fell just short of the Thunderbolts by a score of 8-7. That's two games in a row now that the Firebirds have lost by just one run.

Paige Russell was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Bailey Young also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Fairmont and nudges their season record down to 8-6. Even worse, they were so close both times: the defeats came by an average of only one runs. As for Springfield, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-9.

Springfield suffered a grim 14-1 defeat to Fairmont in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Wildcats avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
