It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Gridley had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They had just enough and edged out the Orland Trojans 18-15. The Bulldogs' victory was nothing new given the team hasn't lost yet this season.
Leading Gridley to victory were Jace Griggs and Marcus Duncan. Griggs rushed for 71 yards and a pair of scores on only six carries, while Duncan rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown while picking up 7.1 yards per carry. Griggs got the majority of those rushing yards when he took off on a run that went for an incredible 57 yards.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Gridley was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 234 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 209 rushing yards in seven consecutive contests.
Orland lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Luke Schager, who rushed for 104 yards, and also threw for 125 yards and one TD on only nine passes. His rushing production has been exceptional for a while as that marked his tenth straight game with at least 100 rushing yards. 112 of Schager's passing yards were hauled in by Manny Martin, who also brought in a receiving touchdown.
Gridley's record now sits at 13-0. As for Orland, they moved to 10-3 with that defeat, which also ended their six-game winning streak.
Coming up, Gridley will head out to face off against Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Orland does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
