Softball Game Preview: Fountain Valley Barons vs. Edison Chargers

Fountain Valley and Edison are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2018, but likely not for long. The Barons will face off against the Chargers at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. Edison took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Fountain Valley, who comes in off a win.

Fountain Valley is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Newport Harbor with a sharp 14-3 win on Tuesday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Courtney Kols looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Andrea Maldonado, who scored five runs while going 3-for-4. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Kim, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two doubles.

Fountain Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Edison was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Los Alamitos, falling 14-1.

Kaila Arakaki was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

Fountain Valley has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.4 runs over those games. As for Edison, their loss dropped their record down to 7-11.

Fountain Valley took their victory against Edison when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Will the Barons repeat their success, or do the Chargers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
