Basketball Recap: Wilcox County Piles Up the Points Against Screven County

Wilcox County had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They took their matchup on Friday with ease, bagging a 75-47 win over the Screven County Gamecocks. The Patriots have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 20 games by 21 points or more this season.

Wilcox County found their leader in sophomore Shamauri Martin, who went 11-for-18 en route to 26 points along with seven assists and five steals. Martin has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 13 times she's played. Zariah Martin was another key player, putting up 18 points in addition to six assists and six steals.

Wilcox County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 30 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Screven County's loss came despite strong showings from Jaliah Roberts and Olivia Jackson. Roberts shot 40% from the field on her way to 22 points and seven rebounds, while Jackson dropped a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards. That was a full 46.8% of Screven County's points, marking the third time in a row Roberts has posted more than a third of the team's points.

Wilcox County's victory bumped their record up to 27-1. As for Screven County, they moved to 23-6 with that defeat, which also ended their ten-game winning streak.

Coming up, Wilcox County will take on Washington-Wilkes at 1:00 p.m. on March 7th. Washington-Wilkes will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something Wilcox County surely won't give up without a fight. Screven County does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
