Volleyball Recap: Livermore Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Livermore and De La Salle squared off in some playoff action on Tuesday, but Livermore had to settle for second. They took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Spartans. The defeat continues a trend for the Cowboys in their meetings with the Spartans: they've now lost three in a row.

The loss didn't mean the game wasn't competitive: De La Salle scored at least 17 points in every set. The match finished with set scores of 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20.

Jacob Smithson paced Livermore's offense, picking up 14 kills. Smithson got some help from Carter Macintosh and his 25 assists.

Xavier Wirth was the offensive standout of the match as he had 17 assists and eight digs. That's the most assists he has posted over his last 11 games. Anthony Beech also deserves some recognition as he had his first kill of the season.

Livermore's defeat dropped their record down to 19-15. As for De La Salle, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-12 record this season.

Livermore does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for De La Salle, they will face off against Moreau Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Mariners will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Spartans surely won't give up without a fight.
